I stumbled upon it as I was googling when it is required for a speaker to pronounce the s in gens (i have been told that there are instances where it is a must). What a welcome surprise! I felt confused at first but I read, re-read and read again and i can at least say that i now understand the rules but helas how will I remember them when writing in a hurry or yikes when speaking in a hurry!But at least now I know and as they say knowing is half the battle. I had to deal with her in 2003 when I got my visa. She was upset that certain documents I submitted -- bank statements, for example -- were not translated. A young man working with her looked at her that day and said: "Mais ce ne sont que des chiffres. Qu'est-ce qu'il y a à traduire ?" The woman did not look happy.<BR/><BR/>The process in France where you supply the same documents to get the <I>carte de séjour</I> that you have already submittted to get the visa is interesting. Even more interesting is that every year, at renewal time, I have to re-submit my birth certificate and a translation. Don't they keep anything in their files? I do my own translations, so at least it doesn't cost me anything.<BR/><BR/>I lived in SF at the time so the several trips I had to make to the consulate during the visa process were not a problem.
